Damage

Termites are discovered in millions of homes each year across the United States. As a result of the hospitable climate of Southern California, this region has some of the highest termite activity nationwide. Termites cause more damage to structures each year than earthquakes, fires and storms combined and the National Pest Management Association estimates termite damage costs U.S. homeowners more than $5 billion annually.

How do these tiny invaders cause so much damage? Termite colonies contain millions of termites, are at work 24/7, and only need a 1/16” space to pass through.

Termites can travel more than 100 yards in search of food, so if your neighbor has termites, chances are you do too.

Signs of Termites

A termite infestation can go unnoticed for years and once signs of a colony have been discovered, damage has already begun. While it is always best to have regular home inspections, termites will often leave hints that they are present. If you see these things, call GUARDIAN to schedule your inspection and treatment.

  • Swarming & Live Insects
    • Termites often swarm in warm weather or immediately following rain in search of new places to form colonies. If you don’t see them flying around, you may see fallen wings on countertops or along window sills.
  • Mud Tubes
    • Termites prefer moist conditions protected from the environment and natural enemies. As such, they form tubes to act as tunnels to move about.
  • Wood Damage
    • Termites feed on the structure of your home, including the wood within the walls, floors, and even ceilings. They eat wood from the inside out, so usually the damage is significant by the time it becomes visible.

Termites in California

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are one of the most commonly found termites in California. Their colonies are relatively small, with a few thousand termites per colony, however there are often multiple colonies in the same structure. A sure sign of Drywood termite infestation is their fecal pellets that are ejected from kick out holes, often found right below the damaged wood. Drywood termites are most commonly found in attic framing, support beams, wall framing, patios, decks, cabinets and even furniture. Even though a Drywood termite colony can be relatively small, they cause a lot of damage very quickly.

Subterranean Termites

As their name implies, subterranean termites nest in the ground and infest homes directly through mud tubes they build along concrete foundations or through crawlspaces. A subterranean termite colony can range from 100,000 to over 1,000,000 termites and there can be multiple colonies on just one acre of land. In fact subterranean termites can travel up to 100 yards from their colony to find a new food source. Subterranean termites are one of the most destructive termites we have here in California due to how large and fast a colony can be.

Dampwood Termites

There are several species of Dampwood termites found across the U.S. Wood that is water-damaged or resting on the ground, such as stumps, fallen tree branches or logs, are primary attractions for Dampwood termites. Dampwood termites may also infest wood affected by leaky roofs and pipes, where it is likely fungus damage also exists.
